Linde launches new safety training programme

Linde Material Handling has launched a bespoke health and safety training programme for its workforce called the Safety Passport.

According to the Health and Safety Executive an estimated 34,000 workers who sustained an injury at work were within the transportation and storage industry. This is significantly higher than for workers across other industries.

The launch of Linde’s compulsory in-house training programme is the first in the materials handling sector and aims to further increase the protection of their workforce.

The Safety Passport is an important investment from Linde that is compulsory for all Linde engineers and is designed to be as non-disruptive as possible, with flexible working modules that staff can complete around their working week.

The training consists of 12 modules, each lasting 20 minutes which are completed over three years. The course is unique in that learning is all done online, meaning staff can complete in bite-sized chunks, rather than having to take several days at time to attend an intensive course.

The programme was developed in partnership with software company Safety Media, and has been verified by Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Chris Weston, content manager at Safety Media said: “When Linde approached us for the Safety Passport, they highlighted the importance of making a programme that was bespoke and aimed at their end user.

“We worked together to make the programme look and feel like a product of their own which consists of 12 modules allowing engineers to jump in and out when necessary.

“For Linde, it’s important their engineers are trained with a high level of safety knowledge, particularly when working in dangerous high-risk environments, but in doing so are not disrupting their work or productivity.

“Safety is a valuable asset for Linde and the creation of the Safety Passport reflects how Linde go above and beyond for their engineers. We are pleased to have worked together with them to create a high-quality bespoke training programme.”

Sharan Gosal, quality and compliance manager at RoSPA said: “We reviewed the course against our strict criteria and were happy to give it our approval.

“It’s very pleasing to see an organisation dedicating itself to employee safety in this way – not only do employers have a legal duty to protect their staff, but they also have a responsibility to ensure everyone gets home to their families, safe and well, at the end of every working day.”

Alan McEnteggart, health, safety & environmental manager at Linde Material Handling said: “Safety is a top priority for our sector and so keeping our staff and customers up to date with training on how to reduce accidents and prevent injuries in their workplaces is important to us.

“At Linde we’ve taken the approach that training should be integrated rather than a bolt-on to warehouse operations, and so we created the Safety Passport with this in mind. By making training accessible online our engineers can learn flexibly and more regularly we have made it as easy as possible for them to learn on the job rather than spend longer periods of time away from the workplace.

“Not only is the Safety Passport already helping to improve safety within our own workplace, but we are also able to pass on this new knowledge and expertise to our customers to help them improve their operations.”
