Midland Pallet Trucks and Midland Bearings, which are both part of the West Midlands-headquartered Midland Bearings Group, have stepped in to help in fight against coronavirus after being designated essential businesses.
Midland Bearings has over 60 million bearings in stock in its Kingswinford warehouse and has used its considerable resource to supply 35,000 miniature bearings this week for use in the manufacture of ventilators.
It is thought that the NHS currently has around 8000 ventilators but, could need as many as 30,000 to treat victims of the respiratory virus. The UK government has been buying ventilators from around the world and called on manufacturers such as Dyson to assist – with car makers Rolls-Royce and Jaguar also having been approached to make ventilators at their facilities in a “wartime-like effort” to increase supply ahead of the projected peak of infections.
Midland Pallet Trucks has also been assisting in the nationwide effort and has supplied 30 pallet trucks to Wolverhampton City Council. They will be used for food storage and distribution at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton. The pallet trucks, which are a familiar site in warehouses and factories, will aid the council’s logistical operations by facilitating food supplies to those in need.
Midland Bearings managing director, Phil Chesworth said, “We have been designated an essential business, which means we have been able to continue operating and do our bit to help all of those on the front lines of the battle against coronavirus. The West Midlands is one of the UK’s worst hit areas outside of London and has been named as a hotspot for the virus so this hits really close to home for us as a local business.
