Their high tolerance to color, material, surface and detection angle makes the new measuring and switching distance sensors of the 10 series from Leuze electronic exceptionally reliable and precise in applications in logistics and conveyor systems as well as in the packaging industry

The optical distance sensors of the 10 series from Leuze electronic are available as measuring (ODS 10) and as switching (HT 10) models. In both variants, a so-called time-of-flight (ToF) technology, i.e., light propagation time measurement, is used for the detection of distances. Here, the new sensors distinguish themselves above all through their high object tolerance to color, surface structure and brightness of the reflective material. Whether organic surfaces such as wood, metal or plastics, whether matt, deep black or glossy, the new ODS 10 and HT 10 master nearly every challenge with constant switching point. They function reliably even with changing environmental conditions or materials as well as with various detection angles to objects that are not aligned exactly orthogonal or that are being rapidly transported. As a result, detection errors are avoided and complicated readjustment is eliminated.

Suitability for practical use has top priority here

The working range of these distance sensors spans from 50 to 8,000 millimeters. When used against a reflective tape, it is even possible to achieve scanning range limits of up to 25 meters. The accuracy with which the ODS 10 and HT 10 detect objects with a diffuse reflectance of 6 to 90% lies at a consistency of up to 4 mm. Aside from the remarkable performance, which, by the way, is achieved with a class 1 laser (red light), Leuze electronic also convinces with the 10 series with a compact and well-thought-out design. The sensors have a robust plastic housing with glass pane and can be used in operating temperatures from -40°C to +50°C. The compact design allows for space-saving mounting in the tightest spaces. For this purpose, the recesses for M4 screws or nuts that are integrated in the housing help not only to save space but also to simplify mounting considerably. Large operating and teach buttons as well as the OLED display with the ODS 10 facilitate step-by-step commissioning and diagnosis of the sensors at the press of a button. The highly visible status displays on the top and front make it easy to check the status, even from a distance or in restricted installation situations. For the electrical connection, users can choose between device versions with a connector, a rotating M12 plug or a pigtail. Moreover, the modular concept continues in the configuration of the switching outputs as well. Depending on requirements, the switching HT 10 is available with up to three switching outputs. For the measuring ODS 10, up to two additional switching outputs can be selected in addition to the analog interface. Furthermore, both device models offer an I/O link interface.

These distance sensors also prove their special suitability for practical use with their so-called prefailure message. Constant monitoring of the received signal level means that the user can be alerted of an impending failure, e.g., as a result of excessive soiling or misalignment, in good time. The corresponding message appears either on the display, in the form of flashing LEDs or is output as a signal via I/O link.

With their high object tolerance, the distance sensors of the 10 series from Leuze electronic are ideal for applications in intralogistics and the packaging industry. Typical applications include compartment occupation checks or compartment fine positioning as well as push-through or collision protection. With their compact and well-thought-out design and the minimal short range (<50 mm), they are also predestined for use in shuttle solutions. Possible applications in the packaging industry sector include, e.g., filling and stack-height monitoring or the monitoring of dancer rolls in foil packaging machines.
