The Schaeffler Group is a leading global supplier to the automotive and industrial sectors. Its portfolio includes high-precision components and systems for engine, transmission, and chassis applications, as well as rolling and plain bearing solutions for a large number of industrial applications. Schaeffler is already shaping the world of tomorrow with innovative and sustainable technologies for electric mobility, digitalisation, and Industry 4.0.
In 2019, The Schaeffler Group generated sales of approximately EUR 14.4 billion in 2019. With around 87,700 employees, Schaeffler is one of the world’s largest family companies and, with approximately 170 locations in over 50 countries, has a worldwide network of manufacturing locations, research and development facilities, and sales companies. With almost 2,400 patent applications in 2019, Schaeffler is Germany’s second most innovative company according to the German Patent and Trademark Office.
As a leading global automotive supplier, the Schaeffler Group offers comprehensive technical expertise for entire drive trains based on internal combustion engines, as well as hybrid and electric vehicles. Core products include clutch systems, transmission components, torsion dampers, valve train systems, camshaft phasing systems and electric drives.
The Industrial division supplies precision products to customers for use in over 60 industrial sectors, from power transmission, mechanical handling and rail, to mining and quarrying, steel, food and beverage, paper, water treatment and power generation. The product portfolio includes rolling and plain bearings, linear and direct drive technology, as well as service features such as maintenance products (bearing mounting and dismounting tools, lubricants and automatic lubrication systems) and condition monitoring systems. The Industrial division offers a wide portfolio of bearing solutions, including needle, cylindrical, spherical, tapered and linear roller bearings, plain bearings, angular contact and deep groove ball bearings, as well as a wide range of linear guidance systems. Bearing solutions range from high-speed and high-precision bearings with small diameters to large-size bearings several metres wide. The bearings and related products are used in drive systems, electric motors, production machines, rail vehicles and wind turbines, as well as in heavy industrial applications. Increasingly, the focus here is on smart products and on connecting components.
Since 2018, Schaeffler has been combining all activities from the mechatronics and digital service business in the ‘Industry 4.0’ unit within the Industrial division. Industry 4.0 stands for intelligent networks that interconnect product development, production, logistics, customers and suppliers. As an industrial supplier, Schaeffler wishes to take an active role in shaping this development for its customers. After all, Schaeffler is already involved wherever something turns or primary data can be harvested. In addition to production technology, Industry 4.0 involves the digital networking of the components and systems used by industrial customers. In this way, rolling bearings can be continuously monitored in, for example, wind turbines or high-speed trains, and operation optimised on this basis. One example of this is the “Machine Tool 4.0”, whose sensor-equipped components measure and report vibrations, forces and temperatures at all relevant bearing positions. This makes it possible to offer cloud-based digital services in order to further increase productivity, reliability and availability.
